The Anchorage House

Situated within the heart of historic Beaufort, South Carolina, the Anchorage House provides a distinctive setting for any social or corporate gathering. Overlooking the salt marshes of the Intracoastal Waterway, the striking double piazzas, graced by ornate Corinthian columns, provide the perfect backdrop for a special event. The interiors of the Anchorage House are adorned with antique heart pine floors and oak woodwork. The frescos and bas relief that embellish the ceilings echo a bygone era. The Anchorage House truly is that special place suited for that special celebration.

History

The Anchorage House, originally known as the William Elliott House, enjoys a proud and illustrious history. William Elliott (1730-1778) erected the original structure in 1770, and it remained in his descendants' possession until the Civil War. During the War, Federal troops confiscated the property and converted it into a hospital, identified on several maps as Federal Hospital Number 11.  

In March 1891, Rear Admiral Lester Beardslee and his wife purchased the Elliott House, and embarked upon an extensive renovation of the structure at a cost of $80,000. An early single-story south porch was replaced with the current facade, imbuing additional grandeur to a building regarded by many as the "Queen of the Bay." 

In the recent past, the Anchorage has functioned as an inn and a restaurant. It also narrowly escaped demolition in 1971, thanks to the efforts of the Historic Beaufort Foundation.

In late 2007, the home was purchased by its current owners and returned to its original use as a grand mansion for entertaining.

Rental Packages

Two rental packages exist. The full house package includes unrestricted use of the house and grounds for four hours. If desired, the house can be reserved for a longer period at an additional $500 per hour. The grounds package includes full use of the grounds and the first story piazza for four hours. This package is ideal for an intimate outside waterside gathering. Both of these packages have the optional use of an on-property commercial prep kitchen.
